Comments on the Summer Reading

The world today requires teachers to prepare students for a more diverse and challenging world than ever before. Through reading the texts, "Educating for Global Competency" and "The Asia Society - Global Competence," I was inspired to consider how these ideas resonate in the visual arts, and consider the variety of ways we can effectively educate students to appropriately address these global issues.

In the brief time I had to meet and work with students at BB&N so far, I recognize that the students are incredibly considerate, curious, and kind. This attitude and positive disposition that is what first attracted me to work at BB&N. However, these qualities are also the firm foundation for globally competent individuals.

As a new faculty to the visual arts department, I look forward to providing additional opportunities for students to learn about global competence. I am particularly excited to have students create and share artwork about their own history and background, collaboratively work on projects and assignments, and analyze and reflect upon artwork that reflects cultural diversity. These are important ways to create global competence, because globally competent individuals must have the ability to look at a situation through multiple perspectives and interact with people from vastly different cultures.

Global education is multidimensional and requires a team of educators to fully engage students in learning about the variety of twenty-first century challenges and opportunities. Being a new to BB&N, I am looking forward to learning more about BB&N's efforts in place to effectively educate students about global competency and framework for thinking about global perspectives.
