There are a variety of opportunities within each Department and/or course taught at BB&N where students are experiencing the affective, action and academic dimensions of global competency. Reading many of the posts before mine are a testament to that.
As we each ask ourselves, and equally as important, share with each other "where/how are these dimensions woven into the courses I teach or the activities I lead?" and "in what ways do I engage students in conversations around these dispositions?" we move closer toward heightened awareness and greater reinforcement of these competencies within ourselves and our students. Reading these articles and reflecting upon the entries of our colleagues on this blog is a great place to start.
From my vantage point, it's insufficient to "teach science" or to "teach insert topic here" as the primary architects of our students' formal education. Topics that are woven into a context of relevance and applicability to today's real-world challenges inspire our students to seek deeper understanding at developmentally appropriate levels. Are we able to achieve this 100% of the time? I know that I am not there yet, but aspiring to do so is certainly a worthwhile agenda to pursue.
